The winning projects of the 17th TFL Meeting Event

Assigned 376,000 € to future films and TV series supported by TORINOFILMLAB

After three intense days of meetings and presentations that have involved over 300 global audiovisual professionals, who came to Turin from 43 different countries, the 17th edition of the TFL Meeting Event ended on 23rd November with the awarding of 19 prizes for a total of 376,000€.

The awarded projects have participated at the developing programmes organised by TorinoFilmLab – Museo Nazionale del Cinema, chosen by the juries between 16 feature film in the writing phase of SCRIPTLAB, 4 comedy film projects participating in COMEDYLAB, 10 project in a more advanced stage of FEATURELAB and 2 further developed internationally co-produced films granted with the TFL CO-PRODUCTION FUND, and the 9 original tv series projects baked by SERIESLAB.

The 76 writers, directors and producers, that have worked with TFL tutors, have presented with images and words the ideas of 32 film and 9 tv series in front of an audience of professionals from the industry. The goal to connect TFL writers, directors and producers with potential partners and allow them to continue in the realization of their own film has been achieved with 600 meetings one-to-one.

A real co-production market that every November in Turin opens a window on the cinema of the future. This year culminated in the award ceremony on Saturday 23rd, during which the winning projects 2024 were announced, that receive support for development and production, to encourage co-productions and a sustainable attitude in filmmaking, also thanks to the support of several international partners.

TORINOFILMLAB’S PRIZES

The TFL PRODUCTION AWARDS – consisting in four prizes of 40,000 € each for a total of 160,000 € - have been chosen between 10 FeatureLab projects by the jury composed of Didar Domehri (France), producer and president of Maneki Films; Kristy Matheson (UK), director of the British Film Institute; Julien Razafindranaly (France/Germany), Head of Sales at Films Boutique; Nada Riyadh (Egypt), filmmaker and co-founder of Felucca Films; and Holger Stern (Germany), Editor-in-Chief of ARTE Film & Fiction.

The winning projects are:

·         Antonivka by Kateryna Gornostai (Writer & Director, Ukraine) and Vika Khomenko (Producer, Ukraine) – 2nd feature film;

·         Cold Ashes Can Cause Forest Fires by Ashmita Guha Neogi (Writer & Director, India) and Avantika Singh Desbouvries (Producer, India) - 1st feature film;

·         The Boy and the Fight of the Spiders by Jarell Serencio (Writer & Director, Philippines) and Jed Medrano (Producer, Philippines) - 1st feature film;

·         Yellow Chrysanthemum by André Hayato Saito (Writer & Director, Brazil) and Mayra Faour Auad (Producer, Brazil) - 1st feature film.

Among 9 candidates of SERIESLAB, the jurors Mignon Huisman (Head of Series NPO, Netherlands), Sophie Taylor-Gooby (Producer, United Kingdom), Iñigo Trojaola (Editorial Director Movistar+, Spain) decided to assign two SERIESLAB DEVELOPMENT AWARDS of 10,000 € each to:

·         The Heir byAbiola Ogunbiyi (Writer & Creator, United Kingdom);

·         The Making of a Terrorist by Leif Edlund (Writer & Creator, Sweden) and Emelia Hansson (Writer, Sweden).

While the COMEDYLAB AWARD of 5,000€ has been granted by Oscar Alonso (Head of Distribution LAZONA Pictures, Spain), Gabrielle Dumon (Producer Sciapode, France) and Laura Nacher (Sales agent, France) to the project:

The Last Queen by Stefano La Rosa (Writer & Director, Italy) and Luca Renucci (Writer & Director, Italy) - 1st feature film.

The 17th TFL Meeting Event has been the occasion to officially assign the 2 TFL CO-PRODUCTION FUNDS (50,000 €, awarded with the contribution of Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the European Union) to:

·         Awaiting Birds by Sofía Quirós Ubeda (Director, Costa Rica / Argentina) and Elisa Fernanda Pirir (Producer, Norway);

·         Past Future Continuous by Firouzeh Khosrovani (Director, Iran) & Morteza Ahmadvand (Director, Iran), and Giulia Campagna (Producer, Italy).

PARTNERS’ PRIZES

Numerous awards have been assigned on stage - backing the further development, production or post-production of some projects thanks to prestigious collaborations with TFL partners.

The EURIMAGES CO-PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT AWARD - a cash-prize of € 20,000 - encourages international co-production from the initial stages of a project and it was attributed by the jurors Csaba Bereczki, Christoph Friedel and Fiorella Moretti to the ScriptLab project: The Criminals by Serhat Karaaslan (Writer & Director, Turkey) – 2nd feature film.


Also, the CNC AWARD - a grant of € 8,000 offered by CNC - Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée -granted by the dedicated jury composed by
Francesca Andreoli, Frederic Boyer and Ioanna Stais went to a ScriptLab title: Josie Goes To War by Coline Confort (Writer & Director, France) and Perrine Prost (Scriptwriter, France) - 2nd feature film.

Another recognition reserved to ScriptLab projects is the ARTEKINO INTERNATIONAL AWARD(6,000 Euros) that goes to Explorer by Hilke Rönnfeldt (Writer & Director, Germany/Iceland) – 1st feature film.

While the ARRI AWARD - a grant of € 10,000 provided by ARRI, leading designer and manufacturer of camera and lighting systems, to support the implementation of a visual concept – has been assigned to the FeatureLab project: A Day in the Life of Jo: Chapter Phaedra by Jacqueline Lentzou (Writer & Director, Greece) and Annabelle Aronis (Producer, France / Greece) – 2nd feature film.

Furthermore, thanks to the SUB-TI AWARD (offered by Sub-Ti Ltd London), will provide one of the FeatureLab projects with English, Italian or German subtitles (up to € 2,000); this year it went to Sea, Star, Woman by Jeunghae Yim (Writer & Producer, Korea) and Helen Olive (Producer, United Kingdom). While the SUB-TI ACCESS AWARD - that promotes accessible contents of the film for audiences with sensory disabilities - goes to a FeatureLab project that will receive subtitles and audio description (up to € 5,000); the title benefitting from the award is The Night Burns by Angelica Gallo (Writer & Director, Italy) and Andrea Gori(Producer, Italy).

The IEFTA AWARD, conferred by the International Emerging Film Talent Association, which consists of a €3,000 contribution aimed at directors from emerging territories and it went to Dear Insects and Other Creepy Stories by Karla Lulić (Writer, Director & Producer, Croatia) and Jelena Mađarić (Producer, Croatia).

Lastly, the POST-PRODUCTION AWARD 2024 offered and assigned by TFL's partners APostLab in collaboration with Filmmore and Posta, to former ScriptLab and FeatureLab projects currently at an advanced stage of development or financing went to Sealskin (Scriptlab 2022, FeatureLab 2023) by Irene Moray (Spain), produced by Marta Cruañas (Vilaüt films - Spain).

THE GREEN AWARDS

TorinoFilmLab assigns two awards to support the reflection on the global changes affecting our society, and to encourage eco-sustainable actions on the production set. 

The TFL WHITE MIRROR - € 5,000 development award created to support stories that tackle environmental issues, sustainability or any related changes happening in today’s world – has been assigned to the ScriptLab project The Funeral by Carolina Markowicz (Writer & Director, Brazil), 3rd feature onward.

TheGREEN FILMING AWARDS - a joined venture between TFL and Trentino Film Commission consisting of a contribution of 4,000 € for the implementation of sustainable production - this year went to 3 FeatureLab projects:

 

·         Antonivka by Kateryna Gornostai (Writer & Director, Ukraine) and Vika Khomenko (Producer, Ukraine) – 2nd feature film;

·         Cold Ashes Can Cause Forest Fires by Ashmita Guha Neogi (Writer & Director, India) and Avantika Singh Desbouvries (Producer, India) - 1st feature film

·         Legacy by Aliaksei Paluyan (Writer & Director, Belarus) and Paulina Toenne (Producer, Germany) – 2nd feature film.
