| | | | | | | | | The readers' corner: Pharmaceutical industry and corruption | | by an European neuro-psychiatrist
| | The political world is constantly exposed to the tactics of the pharmaceutical industry. This pressure affects state agencies, often at the highest level, responsible for deciding on the "marketing authorisation" of new drugs and negotiating their prices. The financial stakes, by their magnitude, are enough to understand why senior officials, ministerial officials, scientific leaders, leading academics, etc. give in to the "power of money", as shown by the many scandals, usually quickly suppressed or forgotten. But it is not only direct corruption whose secret workings are ignored. Laboratories have legal, authorised or tolerated means to expand their markets. In this respect, the market for psychotropic drugs is certainly the most sensitive. It might be useful, based on the experience of an academic familiar with the "tricks" of this market, to inform the international bodies involved in the fight against corruption. |
