European Union and Council of Europe reiterate their continued support to reforms to ensure human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Central Asia

The first Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2023 was held online on 4 June 2021 and took stock of the Programme’s progress achieved over the past 17 months. The meeting was opened by the Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan Sven-Olov Carlsson and the Director of the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes of the Council of Europe Verena Taylor and attended by high-level representatives of the state authorities of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Fighting economic crime
Fighting economic crime
The Programme is continuing to assist the authorities of Central Asian countries in reviewing national legislation. A webinar on improving existing mechanisms of protection of the rights of entrepreneurs in the Kyrgyz Republic was hold on 16 April 2021 in co-operation with the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Institutional support
In the field of promoting efficient functioning of state institutions and public administration, the following activities have been conducted:
 
  • UZBEKISTAN: On 22-23 April 2021, the President of the Venice Commission Mr. Gianni Buquicchio addressed the II International Legal Forum “Tashkent Law Spring” upon invitation by the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Ruslanbek Davletov. A number of high-ranking officials from different countries, international organisations and high-level national and international experts attended the 2021 edition of this biennial forum.
