ABRIDGED REPORT
________
1. The Steering Committee on the Mass Media (CDMM) held its 47th meeting in the Makedonia Palace, Thessaloniki, Greece on 10 December 1997. The meeting was chaired by Mr B. MÖWES (Germany). The list of participants is set out in Appendix I. The agenda, as adopted, appears in Appendix II.
2. During the meeting, the CDMM finalised the draft political texts to be submitted to the 5th European Ministerial Conference on Mass Media policy (Thessaloniki, 11-12 December 1997). The CDMM also took note of the offers made by Poland, Portugal and Slovakia to host the 6th Ministerial Conference on Mass Media Policy, the date and theme of which would have to be fixed at a later stage. The Committee of Ministers might wish to note that the CDMM decided to examine these offers in 1998 before submitting a proposal to the Committee of Ministers for decision.
3. The CDMM took note of the decision of the Committee of Ministers to instruct the CDMM, as well as the Steering Committee for Human Rights (CDDH), to examine the follow-up which might be given, in the framework of their respective activities, to the monitoring procedure carried out in 1997 by the Committee of Ministers in the field of freedom of expression and information. The Committee of Ministers might wish to note that the CDMM will examine this issue at its next meeting (June 1998) and report to the Committee of Ministers in due course on the decisions it might take in this regard.
4. The CDMM reviewed the work of its Group of Specialists on the media in a pan-European perspective (MM-S-EP), took note of the dates of its meetings and those of its subordinate bodies in 1998, approved the list of items to be included on the agenda of its 48th meeting (June 1998), carried out elections for members of its Bureau, took note of the progress made in the revision of the European Convention on Transfrontier Television and took note of recent legal and technical developments in the media field.
