Closing Regional Conference of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme
On 11 June 2024, 80 participants representing national partner institutions from Central Asia, including ministries, Constitutional and Supreme courts, Ombudspersons, Law enforcement agencies, Anti-corruption authorities, National training institutions of legal professionals took stock of the results and lessons learned of the joint EU/Council of Europe Central Asia Rule of Law Programme. The programme, launched in 2020 ended on 1 July 2024.

Common legal space
The Kyrgyz Republic acceded to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons

On 22 April 2024, the Kyrgyz Republic officially deposited the instrument of accession to the  Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons of the Council of Europe, which represents a visible result of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme’s efforts in creating a common legal space between Europe and Central Asia, based on European and international standards. The Convention will enter into force in respect of the Kyrgyz Republic on 1 August 2024.

Seminar on Council of Europe Conventions in the field of criminal law for a delegation of Uzbekistan

A delegation of thirteen representatives of Uzbek public institutions deepened their knowledge of Council of Europe legal instruments in the field of criminal law. The discussions underlined the commitments and benefits of accession for the national system and the ongoing reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan.

Enhancing human rights protection

Spring School on “Human Rights and Environment” for law students from the Central Asia region

Over five days, 41 law students from the Central Asia region received first-hand information from European and international experts, including a judge of the European Court of Human Rights, who gave lectures and engaged the participants in interactive discussions and practical workshops.

Seminar on “Protection of women’s rights: International and European approaches”

40 civil servants and civil society organisations representatives from Kazakhstan gained knowledge on the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention), to which Kazakhstan was invited to accede by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2020.

Action against economic crime

Exchange of best practices between anti-corruption authorities of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Council of Europe member states
Representatives of anti-corruption authorities of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan became more familiar with the Council of Europe's standards and instruments in the fight against economic crime and corruption.

Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Uzbek authorities exchange experience on asset recovery and management with peers from Belgium and Switzerland

On 27-30 May 2024, representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Offices of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan met with their peers from Belgium and Switzerland to enhance the recovery and management of illicit assets processes in their respective countries.
