ACTIVIES AND PROJECTS ON MIGRATION AND ASYLUM

Following the signature of a Protocol by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior and the Italian Bishop Conference (CEI), Caritas Italiana is working on the activation of a humanitarian corridor from Ethiopia for 500 refugees hosted in the camps across the country. Caritas Italiana, in addition to the identification and selection of beneficiaries, will be active in searching hosting places among families, parishes and religious institutes. The reception will  follow the methodology used within the Project "Protected. A Refugee at home" aimed at securing especially integration pathways.

Caritas Italiana is engaged in an operation of Resettlement from Jordan of Syrian families living in the refugee camps of the country. These are people with serious medical pathologies, already recognized as refugees by UNHCR. Once arrived in Italy, families are hosted by the diocesan Caritas capable of ensuring an adequate health care. This program will be implemented through the project "Protected. A Refugee at home " at securing especially integration pathways.

The project Prointegra has planned the resettlement in Italy of more than 300 Afghans, divided in several households. Their integration has occurred within the institutional program for accommodation – SPRAR - in projects run by the diocesan Caritas. The project follows the agreement among  the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior/Central Service.

Migramed Meeting is a meeting where Caritas Italiana meets partners from Europe and the Mediterranean’s area  that are active in supporting, hosting and protecting migrants. An opportunity for a throughout reflection, an  exchange of information, collaboration, policies proposals,  to be presented to policy makers at national and European level.

Caritas Italiana Migration Office actively participates to the activities promoted by Caritas Europa on migration and asylum, with particular attention to the advocacy work done on behalf of the European Institutions. Currently Caritas Italiana chairs the Advocacy Migration Working Group.

Since years Caritas Italiana promotes Migration Coordination Meetings at national level to guarantee the network of the diocesan Caritas a continuous discussion on issues relating to migration, in order to constantly monitor local, national and international  events and activities. The goal of this working group is the creation of mutual exchange and strengthening processes, where sharing  information and training tools are important for the daily commitment of the diocesan Caritas and of Caritas Italiana on such a complex issue.

The goal of providing correct, detailed and comprehensive communication on Migration has led Caritas Italiana to set up a portal on migration: Caritasinmigration (http://www.caritasinmigration.caritas.it)

Caritas Italiana is working for the creation of  Migradvisor, an app for the smartphone that could inform migrants on assistance and welcome services available all over the country. Through this system foreign citizens may be informed on the rights that are granted them and guaranteed by the Italian welfare system such as health, education and hospitality.

The projecto PIER (Protection, Integration, Education for Refugees)  has the aim to support and strengthen  integrations actions for the refugees living in Austria, Greece and Italy.  In Italy, the project plans to  strengthen the ongoing actions, such as projects and initiatives implemented by the diocesan Caritas regarding  Italian language course, social orientation  and  work placement.

The main goal of the Project “Presidium” is the creation of a  permanent structure, where specialized operators and volunteers can ensure to workers employed in the agricultural sector and in evident condition of exploitation, a place of listening, guidance and protection with respect to their legal, health and work situation. These operators  work also through mobile structures in order to reach camps where workers are exploited and in a condition of segregation.  Currently the project is active in 18 diocesan Caritas distributed throughout Italy and in particular in the South.

The project Semi di Giustizia is the result of a consensus achieved in 2016 in the wake of the launch of the campaign Coop “Tasty and fair” regarding  legal food and agriculture chains and illegal employment.  

Sabir is the name of a widespread Festival on Mediterranean cultures, promoted by several Italian organizations. The event aims at creating a place where people can meet and share ideas on migrations and international protections topics.

Asylum seekers, the reception system, the situation in Italy, forced migrants in the world, are the contents of the Report on International Protection in Italy realized by Caritas Italiana, in collaboration with other organizations and  UNHCR. Each year a thematic focus is chosen and specific recommendation are provided.

The Presidio Report  is a tool that wants to inform on labour exploitation in agriculture, realized by Caritas Italiana, in collaboration with several diocesan Caritas, partners in the project.

The Migration Report, a publication that describes the situation of international and national mobility with a specific attention to the Italian immigration through the analysis of some main topics - flows, work, family, minors, school and international students, citizenship, mass media, religious affiliation and migration pastoral. The goal is to analyses the present moment starting from the historical journey of migration lived by country, within a European and international context.
