Objectives

By the joint organisation of the European Day of Justice, the European Commission and the Council of Europe support initiatives which aim to bring justice closer to citizens. This Day represents an opportunity to inform citizens of their rights and offer them a better understanding of the functioning of the judicial systems through events organised mainly by courts. On this occasion, the work of the European Commission for the efficiency of justice (CEPEJ) and of the European Commission is highlighted as a real support for justice professionals.

Support

The Council of Europe has sent documentation as well as pens, notepads and document wallets on request. The CEPEJ posted events on dedicated web pages.

The European Commission has put the poster of the 2014 edition of the European Day of Justice at the disposal of its member States (in 23 languages).

Events by country

The main event of the 2014 edition of the European Day of Justice to which representatives of the CEPEJ of the Council of Europe took part has been organised on 16 October 2014 in Aveiro (Portugal), by the Portuguese Solicitadores Chamber, in the framework of the Vith National Congress of Solicitadores.

The twelwe following countries organised special events in the framework of the European Day of Justice: Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina (2 events), Spain,  the “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” (4 events from which one at a national level organised in the courts of the whole country), France (3 events), Germany, Italy, Lithuania (7 events), Portugal (2 events), Norway, Romania and Slovenia (2 events).

Austria

The Court of Appeal in Vienna had an "Open Day" on 26 October offering guided tours through this precious example of architecture and explanations on trials and the daily work of judges.

Belgium

A conference hosted at EU Parliament on 12 November 2014 presented the results of the expert report “The Third Pillar: Access to Judicial Remedies for Human Rights Violations by Transnational Business” and engaged participants in a discussion of the potential solutions to improve access to justice in the EU.

Bosnia-Herzegovina (2 events)

On 30 October 2014 in Novi Travnik, a Court open Day: Free access to citizens and guided tours of elementary school, high school and law school students has been organised followed by a Round Table: " Sexual violence in armed conflict " standards and practice , International legal framework and realisation of property and legal compensation claims, with the cooperation and support of the OSCE Mission in Bosnia & Herzegovina and will bring together representatives of courts, prosecutors, ministries, the bar association, the centers for social work and other governmental and non-governmental organization in the Canton Middle Bosnia,

the “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” (4 events)

-       Organisation of one-day workshop regarding the new CEPEJ Report “European Judicial System” Edition 2014 on 27 October 2014

-       Giving legal advice by representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Bar Association, the Chamber of Enforcement Agents, the Notary Chamber and Bailiffs Chamber,  in Kicevo on 22 October 2014

-       Organised simulated trial in the Academy for judges and public prosecutor, organised by the Academy for training of judges and public prosecutors on 28 October 2014 in Skopje 

-       In all Basic courts, Administrative Court and Appellate Courts in the Republic of Macedonia, the 24 October 2014 has been an open day for the citizens. Every Basic court, Administrative Court and Appellate Courts independently organised the celebration of the European day of Civil justice. Furthermore, the presidents of the courts, invited students to attend the hearings in the courts and organised lectures in order to bring closer the activities of the court to the students in the secondary schools.

France (3 events)

-       Information day in Rennes on  17 octobre 2014, under the auspices of the European judicial network in civil and commercial matters (European Judicial Network in civil and commercial matters)

-       The Association « Toulouse Cité Européenne du Droit »  representing all judicial professions of Toulouse  organised, on 21 November 2014, a European day of civil justice, with the support of the Cour of Appeal of Toulouse, in Barcelona (Spain)

-       Information day in Perpignan on 14 November 2014 on the theme of international work contracts, organised by the European Judicial Network in civil and commercial matters.

Germany

An international conference has been organised in Münster from 29 to 31 October 2014 to celebrate the European Day of Justice.

Italy

A conference on the civil process and the presentation of studies of the central services on foreigner’s law and international relations has been organised in Ferrara on 24 October 2014.

Lithuania (7 events)

- Commemorating the day of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, the National Courts Administration on 31 October 2014 opened the Courts‘ exposition, where the exhibits, reflecting the changes of judicial system in different historical periods, have been presented.


Besides, other activities took place in the courts of Lithuania:


- Courts of Panevežys organised the event for pupils „In historical pathways of Panevežys courts“.

- In the District Court of Prienai Region pupils participated in the role-play of court proceedings.


- The Chairperson of the Kaunas District Court introduced the students of the Law Faculty of Vytautas Magnus University to the Constitutional principal of court independence and its practical safeguard.


- District Court of Kelmes region organised the drawing competition for pupils on the theme „My rights and duties“.

- District Court of Šakiai region organised a prize awarding ceremonry to an author of open letter to a judge competition.

- The pupils‘ legal knowledge competition „Brain battle“ has been held in other courts

Portugal

-       Vith National Congress of Solicitadores and Crystal Scales of Justice Prize awarding ceremony in Aveiro on 16 and 17 October 2014.

-       Conference in order to celebrate the 34 years of the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction on 27 October 2014 in Lisbon.

Norway

A conference on “The Norwegian Supreme Court and the internationalisation of law “ has been organised in Solstrand on 20 of October 2014.

Romania

On 24 October 2014, at the National Institute of Magistrac, at the premises of the Superior Council of Magistracy, but also in the courts and the prosecutors’ offices in Romania, open doors activities for citizens, students and professionals in field of justice have been organised. Round tables with the stakeholders of the judicial system, meetings and presentations for students, justice auditors and clerks have also been organized.

The Practical Guides – Models of requests for the court-users in civil and criminal matters have also been launched on this day.

Slovenia (2 events)

-       Visit to the Supreme Court of the Republic of Slovenia on 24 October 2014 for students from the Law Faculty at the University of Ljubljana. They had a presentation of the Slovenian judicial system, as well as the opportunity to talk to a Supreme court judge about the vocation of a judge and his/her duties and responsibilties.

-       Publication of frequently asked questions (FAQ) on the portal of the Slovenian judiciary (http://www.sodisce.si/informacije/FAQ) on 25 October 2014.

Spain

The Association « Toulouse Cité Européenne du Droit »  representing all judicial professions of Toulouse  organised, on 21 November 2014, a European day of civil justice, with the support of the Cour of Appeal of Toulouse, in Barcelona (Spain)
