Ref. CG-PR033(2012) More than 300 activities in 29 countries for the European Week of Local Democracy 2012 Strasbourg, 14 October 2012 – 130 local and regional authorities and partner associations have registered for actively participating in European Local Democracy Week (ELDW). 18 of these are “12 Star Cities” across 29 countries. Over 300 activities will take place between 15 and 21 October 2012 to bring together local elected representatives and citizens. This is the data received from new ELDW web tools 1 day in advance of the official opening of this event co-ordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. John Warmisham, political co-ordinator of the ELDW, said, “the feedback from local and regional authorities and other NGOs about the preparations on the ground for ELDW is very encouraging. We are certain that this year will break a new record in terms of participants”, he underlined. “The growing interest of associations in this initiative, especially youth councils, as well as the number of participants who are marking their first participation this year, confirms our vision for the promotion of ELDW back in 2007. It is a sustainable and concrete measure for local democracy and citizen participation”, added Congress President, Keith Whitmore.
