12th meeting of the Gender Equality Commission
During its 12th meeting in Prague the GEC agreed to transmit the text of the draft Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023 to the Committee of Ministers. The GEC also adopted its 2017 Annual Report on the implementation of the current Strategy, and discussed the work of the Drafting Committee preparing a draft Committee of Ministers’ recommendation to prevent and combat sexism.
New Council of Europe instrument and publications
In September 2017, the Committee of Ministers adopted Recommendation CM/Rec(2017)9 on gender equality in the audiovisual sector. The Council of Europe has also published an analytical report on the 3rd round of monitoring on the implementation of CM Recommendation Rec(2003)3 on balanced participation of women and men in political and public decision-making, a training manual for judges and prosecutors on ensuring women’s access to justice and the first baseline evaluation reports adopted by GREVIO on Austria and Monaco as well as on Albania and Denmark.
CEPEJ-STAT: A dashboard on gender equality in courts and prosecution services
The statistical database of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ-STAT) of the Council of Europe now allows for easy consultation of main trends on the number of women and men in judicial institutions in our member States via a specific dashboard on gender equality in courts and prosecution services.
6th International Conference of Roma Women
The 6th International Conference of Roma Women took place on 6-7 November in Strasbourg (France). The Vice-Chairperson of the Gender Equality Commission was one of the speakers of this conference, which focused on the political representation of Roma and Traveller women.
Promoting and consolidating women’s rights in the South Mediterranean
In the framework of the co-operation initiated with Tunisia, the Council of Europe and the Tunisian Ministries of Women, Family and Children and Local Affairs and Environment, co-organised the Conference “Women and Local Government”, held on 26-27 September in Tunis. This conference allowed different stakeholders (national and local authorities, parliamentarians, civil society representatives, the media, academics, etc.) to exchange and reflect on the means, practices and challenges to strengthen women’s political participation at the local level.
Gender Equality in the European Union
The Gender Equality Commission Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson, GREVIO’s President and members of the Council of Europe Secretariat participated in the 2017 Annual Colloquium on fundamental rights on “women’s rights in turbulent times” on 20-21 November in Brussels (Belgium). The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) released its 3rd edition of the Gender Equality Index on 11 October and Eurostat released a digital publication presenting the life of women and men in Europe.
External publications
The OECD report The Pursuit of Gender Equality: An Uphill Battle concluded that countries need to do much more to close gender gaps worldwide, as gender gaps persist in educational, social, economic and political fields. The International Telecommunication Union published ICT Facts and Figures 2017, highlighting the persistence of the digital gender gap. The Global Gender Gap Report 2017 was published by the World Economic Forum, ranking 144 countries on the gap between women and men in four areas. The Global Early Adolescent Study explored the factors in early adolescence that predispose young people to sexual health risks.
