Programme of the 20th Commemoration

 

Moderators: Thaddée Twahirwa + Paul Nsengiyumva

8.30 am: Opening to the public and registration

9.00 am:  Opening address by Yvonne Nsengiyumva, a member of Amariza d’Alsace

9.15 am: A short period of meditation in memory of the genocide victims: ecumenical prayer, lighting of a candle, minute of silence

9.30 am: Rwandan song performed by Suzanne NYIRANYAMIBWA

9.40 am: Address by His Excellency Jacques KABARE, Rwandan Ambassador to France

9.50 am: Address by Dr Carole REICH, who runs the Council of Europe programme on “Passing on the Remembrance of the Holocaust and prevention of crimes against humanity”. Her subject will be: The 20th commemoration in the framework of the Council of Europe programme on “Passing on the Remembrance of the Holocaust and prevention of crimes against humanity”.

10.00 am: Address by Dr Francine MAYRAN, psychiatrist and painter, whose art focuses on remembrance

10.15 am: Break

10.30 am: Lecture by Mr Marcel KABANDA, a historian who, with Jean-Pierre Chrétien, has written works on the warning signs of genocide, and who chairs Ibuka France, an association which represents victims of the Rwandan genocide. His subject will be: The perpetration of the Tutsi genocide and its remembrance.

11.15 am: A personal account by Mr Emmanuel RUGEMA, a survivor, who chairs Ibuka Rhône Alpes. His subject will be: How are the survivors rebuilding their lives 20 years on?

11.45 am:  Discussion with the public

12 noon: Guided tour with Dr Francine MAYRAN of her exhibition entitled After the Holocaust people said “never again…”, but… featuring portraits of victims, survivors, the Righteous, and memories of the Tutsi genocide

12.30 pm: Lunch break

1.30 pm: Musical interlude by Suzanne NYIRANYAMIBWA

1.45 pm: Lecture by Alain and Dafroza GAUTHIER, the former being Chair of the CPCR, Collective of Civil Plaintiffs for Rwanda. Their subject will be: No rebuilding without justice

2.15 pm: Lecture by Amélie MUTARABAYIRE-SCHAFER, Gestalt therapist, Coordinator of the Médecins du Monde-Ibuka Rwanda mental health programme. Her subject will be: What can we tell our children so that we pass on more than the mere fact that a genocide took place?

2.45 pm: A personal account by Sandrine ROSENBERGER, granddaughter of a victim

3.00 pm: Film: Le cri d’une mère qui espère (The cry of a mother who still has hope) by Béatrice MUKAMULINDWA, founder of the NGO known as CCEMS (Cri du Cœur d’une Mère qui Espère)
