Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland sends letter of support to Japan

 

 

In his letter sent on 14 March to the Prime Minister of Japan, Secretary General expressed his condolences and solidarity with the people of Japan after the tragic loss of countless human lives following the earthquake and the devastating tsunami which struck Japan last Friday. ''I am deeply shocked by the reports and images presented, and I would like to assure you of our support to the people of Japan in the efforts to overcome the unimaginable challenges posed by such a terrible situation'', he wrote in the letter.

The Secretary General organised a ceremony of solidarity for the Council of Europe staff, as well as members of Diplomatic Missions, which took place on the forecourt of the Palais de l'Europe on 18 March.
